Florence celebrates Cosimo I and Caterina de’ Medici
Probably one of the first power couples, they were both born in 1519. Over 50 events will remember them this year, from exhibitions to concerts, guided tours, conferences, theater plays and tastings. 500 years later, the genius of Leonardo da Vinci lives on
This year, Tuscany celebrates the life of Leonardo on the 500th anniversary of his death. There are countless events taking place throughout the region and in Florence too, our picks below:
- The Atlantic Codex exhibition at Palazzo Vecchio, until 24th June 2019. One of his last written memories, the codex is a sheet dedicated to the totemic animal of Florence.
- Until 12th January 2020, visitors can follow a special itinerary at Palazzo Vecchio dedicated to the Battle of Anghiari, a fresco that Leonardo started here but never finished.
- The exhibition about Verrocchio, Leonardo’s master, at Palazzo Strozzi, until July 14th 2019 .
For the first time, the exhibition brings together extraordinary masterpieces by Andrea del Verrocchio, one of the greatest masters of the fifteenth century, along with fundamental works by artists such as Pietro Perugino, Domenico Ghirlandaio and Leonardo da Vinci.
No more scaffolding in Piazza della Signoria
Bartolomeo Ammannati’s Fountain of Neptune in Florence’s Piazza della Signoria has been restored. Following two years of intense work, the statue by the Palazzo Vecchio has been returned to its former glory, including an overhaul of the water pump system.
