Burlamacco, the symbol of the city, is a clown-esque figure that takes possession of the city every year and kicks off the festivities of Carnival. The floats, amongst some of the most spectacular of their kind, take a year to prepare and are paraded for several Sundays before Lent along Viareggio’s promenades. Dancing, fireworks and music accompany the celebrations, always loved and cherished by children that come from all across Italy to admire them. A hundred-year tradition that astonishes year after year.
