Chiusi della Verna and the Franciscan Sanctuary of La Verna are the background for two events under the banner of local and historical traditions.
The historic center of the village will come alive in a typically medieval atmosphere.
The festival focuses on a historical fact, when on 8th May 1213, at the castle of San Leo in Montefeltro, Saint Francis of Assisi met the Count Orlando Cattani of the castle of Chiusi in Casentino. On that occasion, the Count, struck by the charm of the little friar, proposed to give him as a gift the Monte della Verna, if he had accepted it.
“I have in Tuscany a devout mountain which is called Mount della Vernia, very solitary and wild, it is well suited to those who want to do penance or to those who want to live alone. If you like it, I would gladly give you and your companions for the sake of my soul”.
The re-enactment, which the locals have been organizing for a long time, recalls the journey that Count Orlando Cattani, lord of Chiusi in Casentino, made in 1214 with his entourage, from his castle to the forest of La Verna, in order to donate the mountain to Saint Francis of Assisi.
A medieval market, historical re-enactment and al fresco banquet make this the perfect occasion to visit this charming village.
