When? Third Sunday in June
Where? Castiglion Fiorentino – Tuscany
The Palio is held on the third Sunday in June, a horse race taking place in Piazza Garibaldi. The event has ancient origins and is held in honor of the Holy Image of Our Lady of Grace of Rivaio, whose picture the three town district compete for.
The event is spread over two days. On Saturday, the provaccia (the rehearsal) and on Sunday, the historical parade and horse race. On Saturday evening, each of the town districts holds a propitiatory dinner, whilst on Sunday morning horses are blessed.
Celebrations sweep up the town after the race, with wine flowing and restaurants serving up local delicacies.
