When? Various dates – June
Where? Orvieto – Umbria
Orvieto, one of the most charming towns in Umbria, hosts an annual historical horse race, the Palio dell’oca (the goose joust). The event traces its origins back to the middle ages when knights competed against one another trying to snatch a goose head from its neck whilst riding a horse. Nowadays, the two town districts compete as opposing factions.
The festival is preceded by a historical parade along the streets of Orvieto and the restaurants offer medieval-inspired menus, a great opportunity to discover more about the region’s history.
