Holy Week in Radicofani
When? 9th-13th April 2020
Where? Radicofani – Tuscany
The Easter Procession of Radicofani is considered one of the seven most beautiful processions in Italy and is the oldest one in Tuscany. It begins on the evening of Holy Thursday, with a mass that recalls the Last Supper and the opening of the tomb of Christ. This is followed by the procession of penance known as the buia, which commemorates the Death of Jesus. The Good Friday procession, begins in the evening departing from the Church of St. Peter and reaching its peak with the arrival at the Church of St. Agatha, where the adoration of the Calvario Illuminato takes place. This masterpiece was built around the beautiful altar by Andrea Della Robbia, a wall of boxwood enriched with 750 lights – a unique spectacle! The pious practice of the Adoration of the Dead Christ is regulated by rules, two people at a time walk through the nave kneeling three times and then kiss the statues of Jesus dead and Our Lady of Sorrows, all this while the choir sings ancient Latin texts.
