At 6 p.m., a solemn mass will be held in the church of S. Francesco in Cortona, during which, as usual, the ceremony of the delivery of the oil for the votive lamp to St. Francis will be held. This is a tradition that originated in Cortona in 1325 and is renewed every year. In fact, it is the mayor or his delegate who hands over the oil to the celebrant, who will then use it to light the lamp placed on the high altar of the church, next to the relic of the True Cross.
To underline the historical value of the event, the ceremony will also see the participation of the historical reenactors of Cortona.
On the same day, at 7 p.m., a painting by the artists Luigi & Kate Agnelli will also be showcased. It is titled “Francesco in Terra Santa” (Francis in the Holy Land), commissioned by the Centro Studi Frate Elia da Cortona to celebrate the eighth centenary of the meeting between Francis and the Sultan (1219-2109), an event that is particularly symbolic and important for the message of peace and harmony it represents.
It will be followed by an aperitif in the refectory of the convent.
